Chizuk Amuno matched with an Afghan family on 01/26/2022, and they arrived on 02/05.
Since then, we have helped this family transition from being refugees to being immigrant newcomers.
Chizuk added a second welcome circle for family members of our first family and have been helping each family group since spring 2022.
Among the milestones we have celebrated so far:
Successfully finding and furnishing an apartment
Teaching the family how to shop for food in the United States
Helping the family access Medicaid and WIC
Connecting the family to health care providers
Helping the head of household find a job, earn a driver’s license and purchase a car
Being guests of the family at a celebratory meal of great Afghan Halal food
Enrolling children in school
Committee members drop off wishlist items for Gilead House residents
GH2: Gemilut Hasadim + Gilead House
The Gemilut Hasadim Committee has a special partnership with Gilead House, a welcoming home for asylum seekers.
Chizuk Amuno partners with ERICA – the Episcopal Refugee & Immigrant Center Alliance – to help empower refugees, asylum seekers, and other immigrants in greater Baltimore who are fleeing injustice, poverty, and persecution. Up to four asylum seekers live in Gilead House at St. Mark’s on the Hill Episcopal Church in Pikesville. Activities our volunteers engage in include taking them shopping for clothes and accessories, providing transportation, and representing Chizuk Amuno on the Gilead House steering committee.
